Analysis
When analyzing the speech Rick Warren gave at Oral Roberts University, it is easy to identify ethos, pathos, and logos. He demonstrates ethos when discussing Galatians 5:6, which adds to his credibility as a pastor. He demonstrates pathos when sharing that he has been at the deathbed of thousands, then pausing to let the audience sit with his words. He demonstrates logos when explaining that people don’t ultimately care about materialistic things such as trophies or awards—what they really care about is love.
One of the most prominent rhetorical devices is his use of hyperbole. When stating what is written in Galatians 5:6, he exaggerates each word, giving it more impact and meaning rather than rushing through it as though it has no significance. In terms of physical delivery, Warren moves his hands to help with the flow of his speech and varies his vocal range to emphasize points or convey the severity of his words. He doesn’t move around much or fidget; he remains calm and grounded throughout.
The impact of his speech is significant, especially given the context: a commencement address to the graduating class of 2024. His central message is that these young graduates should not worry too much about trophies or even their diplomas. Instead, they should focus on love, because in the end, that is what matters most.
